Ok, so you are choosing your next cordless drill, what features are you looking for, we have loads of drills to choose from from all the top brands including Dewalt, Makita, Bosch and Milwaukee, the question which one is best for you. The modern drill is a very powerful power tool – certainly vast improvements have been made in battery performance over the past few years with lithim ion cells becoming the norm, these powerful cordless drill batteries are both lightweight and very efficient they do not suffer from memory effects – this is caused when a cordless drill battery is only partially recharged a number of times, after a period of time the battery ‘remembers’ this low charge level and the overall performance of the battery is impaired. Another big advantage of the lithium ion battery is their lightweight when compared to the nicad battery, their lightweight means a 18 volt cordless drill fitted with lithium ion batteries will not weight anymore than a 12 volt drill which is fitted with nicad batteries – around 3.5 pounds is a good weight for a 18Volt drill by the way.
You need to think about what the drill is to be used for, are you a tradesman wanting a power tool
for use 5 days a week, in that case you will need a 18volt model with two lithium ion batteries from a top line manufacturer such as Dewalt – try the Dewalt DCD760Kl, this is an 18 volt model with lithuim ion cells and a 3 speed gear box, three variable speeds are provided, these cover 0 to 400, 0 to 1200 and 0 to 1800RPM so you have loads of choices, another really nice feature of this Dewalt drill is the incar charges – great for the tradesman who needs to recharge the batteries whilst out on the road, you can read a review of the Dewalt DCD760Kl here.
If on the other hand you are a lighter DIY type user then you should consider a drill such as the Hitachi DS12DVF3, this is a great drill with a 22 position clutch for precise control when screw driving and a very nice compat ergonomic feel which is well suited to it’s intended use, this is a smaller 12 volt drill measuring just over 7 inches and is also very lightweight, it also comes with a rechargeable flashlight free included with the drill, it is an excellent deal at the moment and you should definitely have this cordless drill on your shopping list, read a review of the Hitachi DS12DVF3 here.
You have a large choice of voltages when choosing a cordless drill, from 7.2 at the lower end of the scale, these lightweight drills are best suited for the home user but they are still very capable cordless tools with reasonable power and are very good for screwdriving applications, at the heavier end of the market is the 24 volt cordless drill, these large and heavier drills are best suited to the contractor who needs a heavy and powerful drill to work every day, these drills are similiar in power to output of a corded drill – they are that powerful.
